Today, the Maryland State Education Association—Maryland’s statewide 74,000 member educators’ union—announced their endorsement of Attorney General Brian Frosh’s re-election campaign.

“Attorney General Frosh has been an incredible partner for educators and public schools,” said MSEA President Betty Weller. “We look forward to continuing our work with the ‘People’s Lawyer’ to stop school privatization, uphold student protections, and defend workers’ rights for another four years.”

“As a K-12 graduate of Maryland public schools it’s an honor to receive the support of Maryland’s educators,” said Attorney General Brian Frosh. “As Attorney General, I am committed to ensuring that our schools receive the resources they need and that all children in Maryland are given access to a quality education regardless of where they live.”

Attorney General Frosh has been a chief defender of Maryland public schools and the laws that protect our students during his first term in office. He worked with educators to defend the Protect Our Schools Act. He was also prepared to defend the law in the event that U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos illegally rejected the state’s plan to implement the Every Student Succeeds Act.

The Attorney General also helped support greater accountability for the state’s failed BOOST private school voucher program, helping to reject taxpayer dollars from three private schools that were discriminating against students.

In addition to protecting students and preventing school privatization, Attorney General Frosh has been a leading defender of workers’ rights to organize—essential to protecting the middle class and preventing greater income inequality. He eagerly worked with attorneys general from around the country to submit an amicus brief in support of fair share fees in the Janus v. AFSCME Supreme Court case.

MSEA’s endorsement is one of the most coveted in Maryland elections. Educators are a well-known presence during early voting and on Election Day, as thousands mobilize to promote endorsed candidates at polling places across Maryland with the Apple Ballot.
